IB Math AA vs AI: how to choose
Krsna Academy · · 6 min read
Choose Analysis and Approaches (AA) if you enjoy algebra and may study engineering, mathematics, physics, or economics. Choose Applications and Interpretation (AI) if you prefer statistics, modelling, and using technology, and your university plans do not require calculus-heavy mathematics. The level, HL or SL, matters as much as the course.
The difference in one table
| Analysis and Approaches (AA) | Applications and Interpretation (AI) | |
|---|---|---|
| Emphasis | Algebra, functions, trigonometry, calculus, and proof | Statistics, modelling, and mathematics in real contexts |
| Style | Abstract and symbolic. Exact answers. | Applied and contextual. Interpreting results. |
| Calculator | Paper 1 is without a calculator. Paper 2 allows one. | A calculator is allowed on every paper. |
| Suits students who | Like solving equations and want to know why a method works | Like data and real problems and are comfortable with technology |
Both courses share a common core, and both include calculus and statistics. The difference is how deep each goes and how the questions are asked.
How each course is assessed
| Level | External papers | Internal Assessment |
|---|---|---|
| SL, both courses | Paper 1 and Paper 2, 90 minutes each, 40% each | Mathematical exploration, 20% |
| HL, both courses | Paper 1 and Paper 2, 120 minutes each, 30% each, plus Paper 3, 60 minutes, 20% | Mathematical exploration, 20% |
HL Paper 3 is a problem-solving paper with two long questions that lead you through unfamiliar mathematics. It rewards students who can keep going when the path is not obvious.
HL or SL matters as much as AA or AI
- AA HL is the most demanding option. It is the usual choice for engineering, mathematics, physics, and competitive economics programmes.
- AA SL is a solid, traditional course. It keeps most university doors open for sciences and business.
- AI HL is rigorous and includes substantial statistics and some topics AA does not cover. It is well suited to social sciences, life sciences, and data-focused fields.
- AI SL is the most accessible option and suits students whose plans do not involve further mathematics.
Check university requirements before you decide
This is the step students skip and regret. Some engineering, mathematics, and science programmes require AA specifically, or require HL. Some accept AI HL but not AI SL as a calculus prerequisite. Requirements differ by university and by country, and they change.
Look up three programmes you might realistically apply to and read what each says about IB mathematics. If even one requires AA, that usually settles it.
A simple way to decide
- List the university programmes you are considering and note their math requirements.
- If any require AA or a specific level, choose that.
- If none do, ask which kind of question you would rather spend two years on: solving an equation exactly, or interpreting data from a real situation.
- Choose HL only if you enjoy mathematics and have the time. HL math is a large commitment alongside your other HL subjects.
If you are still unsure, AA SL is the safest middle choice for keeping options open.
Can you switch later?
Often yes, in the first weeks or months of Year 1, and moving from HL to SL is easier than the reverse. Policies are set by each school, so ask your IB coordinator early. Switching late means catching up on content, which is where a tutor can help.
